Some of the best ways to motivate a team is through acknowledge good productivity and efforts on a large stage in front of the team, this gives recognition. Some of the worst ways to motivate a team is through money and bonuses because the team will then start to expect that. Pizza or free dinner is a better way to motivate and reward a team for good productivity and quality work.
There are simply hundreds of ways to motivate any and all members of a team. Consequently, there are also hundreds of ways for that same team to become easily unmotivated. I believe through careful examination of one's personality, it is not hard to figure out what will continue to drive and push them to the best of their abilities which in turn typically leads to a company or organization's success. Depending on a particular personality, the work itself can be very motivating for some individuals and those people are typically the ones you want working for or under you. Additionally, it is much easier for those same individuals to find advancements and promotions within a team and more often than not, it motivates other members of the team because they want the same to happen to them. Recognition is also highly motivating because it sends good crisp messages to the individuals and rarely do they resent that. However, too much recognition could cause an individual to do less because they would think mediocrity could be rewarded. On the other hand, one of the worst ways to motivate a team is through money and/or bonuses because it usually ends in an expectation for doing well. Also, don't reward everyone at one time typically through a raise or promotion because some may feel they are doing way more or way less and consequently would believe it to be okay to do mediocre work like fellow team members. It is best to establish a good working environment from the beginning, otherwise motivation begins to trickle down less and less.
The best ways to motivate a team is not monetary because if money was given, the team would just expect money. A team would appreciate recognition, achievement, the work itself, responsibility advancement, a chance to learn new skills, and even reward with food (i.e. free dinner or pizza). Unrealistic deadlines, ignoring good efforts, creating low quality product, and poor working conditions are all bad ways of motivating a team. Motivation is so crucial when it comes to getting the project done efficiently and effectively.
I'd like to give my answer through an example. Let's say a team is formed to develop a new product. The completion of this product will bring the company success. If management provides recognition and support during the process by supplying the necessary resources and answering any questions or concerns, the team members will feel appreciated in the tasks they are completing. This will result in their motivation levels to increase in completing the product. On the other hand, if the team members experience no recognition or support from management, but instead are criticized by management, the team will lose their motivation to complete the product.
I have experienced even in my subordinates that I manage and agree from the ways to best motivate employees are: 1) recognition, of just simply telling them that they are doing a great job, 2) achievement of a certain task that may be given to them to accomplish, 3) responsibility of seeing how the react to the project and how they come to accomplish the task/project, 4) advancement of giving them a possible future job promotion, 5) a chance to learn new skills that will be beneficial to both the company and themselves. It was stated in the book to not to give out many monetary rewards or any bonuses because if managers give out these monetary rewards all the time, then the employees will come to expect it every time they feel that they did well at the project/task that was assigned and if then they do not receive it may go out and find another job elsewhere. Another one is to not assign unrealistic deadlines in that they will feel pressured to get it done that the project will lack effectiveness and even create a low-quality product. Any decision should be made to the employees as a team and get the input of the team which will also create an effective communication environment. If there are poor working conditions, the manager should figure out a way to inhibit a better environment if necessary to increase effective and efficient productivity, such as sources of lighting, privacy, comfortable work space, and technology and resources.
There are pleny of different ways to motivate a team, and it depends on each situation to decide which ways are most appropriate. In general people on teams that are recognized for their hard work and achievements. Positive reinforcement and a chance to learn new skills is also a good way to go. Every once in an while a llittle pick me up (like a dinner/party) will let the team know they are apporeciated and they will be motivated to continue to perform well. There are also a lot of things that should be avoided when attempting to motivate people. Maintain good working conditions for the group, don't single out one person for doing a good job all the time. Make sure everyone is being praised. Don't assign deadlines that are going to be impossible to meet.
