Chapter 9 - prototypes

Compare and contrast one of the three types of interface design prototypes.

  1. In essence, all of the prototyopes are similar in a sense that they are combining the different aspects of the interface in a brainstorming type manner, this is more of a planning stage as to what the interface will look like. They are different in the ways they are created, however. Storyboard involves more of a physical sense, more hand drawn whereas HTML and Language prototypes are more digital and webbased planning and prototypes.

  2. A story board is one of the easiest interface design protyping. Since it uses a pen and paper, it doesn't take as much technical skill to design. As the programer you just need to know where each componinent of the design is going to go, and draw it out.
The contrast to being simple is that it doesn't allow actual hands on use of a prototype, like an HTML prototype would be.

  3. Language Prototyping is designed in the same way as the HTML prototypes but do not perform any real processing. They enable the user to move from screen to screen, but do not have any function like HTML prototyping. The disadvantage to language prototyping is that it takes longer to develop than HTML and storyboard but the advantage is it gives a preview of what exactly the screens will look like.

  4. Of the three main types of interface design prototyping I will compare Storyboard prototyping and HTML prototyping. Storyboard is a method that is the most simple and only involves a pen, paper and someone who is artistic. While this method is very simple it is not the best for really designing a great interface because it has no added dimension of interaction, it only lays out a blueprint. On the other hand HTML is a web based method of prototyping in which one can go through the process of creating pages, links, buttons etc and design the interaction through activating pages and linking them to one another. The HTML method is superior to Storyboarding in that it allows actual interaction with the system, however its flaw is that the appearance of an HTML prototype will never appear as they will in the actual system.

  5. The three types of interface design prototyping are similar because they are trying to accomplish the same task. Storyboard is the "old fashioned" way of doing interface design with a pen and piece of paper. HTML and language are designed in the same ways through web based systems, enabling the user to move from screen to screen. However, HTML uses webpages created in HTML and language is built with the actual language that will be used for the system.

  6. The interface design prototypes I am chosing to compare and contrast are; HTML and Language. HTML is web based and Language is actually part of the system. For example, HTML uses webpages and Language uses an exact system. The difference between HTML and Language is that HTML will never appear like the real screens; whereas Lanuguage displays the real screens.

  7. The HTML prototype is the most common type of prototype. It is built with webpages that show the most important parts of the system. They show the relationship with the other elements in the system, and connect the processes. Compared to the language prototype, they will never appear exactly like the real screen of the system. And compared to the story board prototype, the HTML prototype allows you to work with the actual system and get a better sense to how it works.

  8. A storyboard is the simplest of all interface prototypes because all they require is paper and a pen and someone with some artistic ability. On the other hand HTML prototyping is the most common prototype used today because they enable users to interact with the system and gain a better sense of how to navigate among different screens, unlike storyboards. Unlike HTML, language prototypes show exactly what the screen will look like. However, language prototypes take longer to develop then HTML or storyboard and they perform no real processing.

  9. 1. Storyboard-it is paper based. Shoes hand drawn pictures of what the screens will look like and how they will flow from one screen to another.

    2. HTML Prototype- most common. It is built with the use of web pages created in HTML. The users can interact with pages by clicking on buttons and entering pretend data into forms. It is limited in that the screens shown in HTML will never appear exactly like the real screens in the system

    3. Language Prototype- built in the actual language or by the actual tool that will be used to build the system. Designed in the same ways as HTML but take longer to develop because they will show exactly what the screens will look like.

  10. There are three types of Interface Design Prototyping. The first prototyping would be considered to storyboard, this would include hand-drawn pictures of how the system will look like on a screen. All the screens will flow from one screen to another. This prototyping is considered to be paper based. HTML is different from storyboard because it is more of screen shots down in HTML instead of being actually being hand drawn.

  11. I personally like to use a mixture of techniques when designing an interface. I start out by storyboarding on a piece of paper. Once I have the look and layout on paper, I lay it out on the computer with a visual prototype in Adobe Fireworks. I will than slice that visual layout and convert that into an HTML or language prototype depending on what type of CMS the site is going to end up running in.
