Chapter 9 - metaphors, objects, actions, icons

Explain the purpose and contents of interface metaphors, interface objects, and interface actions, interface icons, and interface templates.

  1. An interface template defines the general appearance of all screens in the info system along with all paper based forms and reports. The template is used to specify where the navigation areas are, the color schemes, and determines whether windows will open on top of each other or if they will if they will replace each other.

  2. The purpose of the interface metaphors is to help the user understand how to use the system and what will happen if they do use it. It defines how the interface will work.

The interface icons are the pictures that appear on the buttons that represent what the button will do.

The interface object is the actual button that you press.

The interface templates is the appearance of the information system and the basic layout of the page.

  3. An interface metaphor is a concept that defines how the interface will work and the interface template shows the general appearance of all screens in the information system. Interface objects and interface actions are a part of the interface template. The objects are the building blocks of the system while the actions are usually the most commomly used names. An example of an interface object is a shoppig cart and exit vs quit is an example of an interface action.

  4. An interface metaphor defines how the interface will work. For example, Microsoft Word looks like a piece of paper, Quicken Book's interface looks like it is actually a checkbook. The design of the interface needs to correlate directly with the purpose of the interface.

  5. When designing an interface for a system, there are basic design elements that need to be defined by the designer. They elements can be categorized into interface metaphors, interface objects, interface actions, interface icons, and the overall interface template. An interface metaphor defines how the interface will work and how the user will relate to it. It is derived from a real world concept, so the user can associate the computer system with something familiar. Interface objects are the fundamental building blocks of the system, such as entities and data stores. An objects name is an important part of the interface and needs to be an understandable name. Interface actions are part of the navigation and command language of the system. Names given to the most commonly used actions need to reflect the action being undertaken and can vary based on style and grammar. Both interface objects and actions can also be displayed using an interface icon. An icon is a commonly known picture that represents an action or an item. Icons can be handy in saving space or making the interface more intuitive for the user. All of these features combine add up to the interfaces template. The template is the general appearance of the interface and specifies the layout, the color scheme, the language style, and the visual style of icons and images.

  6. The interface metaphor is how the system will work for the use. The templates is the appearance of everything and the screens that will be used. Interface objects is considered to be the building blocks for the system and the development. Interface actions would be the systems abilities that are offered to the user. While the interface icons are the presentation of the system such as the pictures that are used.

  7. The purpose of an interface template defines the general appearance of all screens in the information system and any paper-based forms and reports used. The template is basically the basic layout that the user would see on the screen (ie. where the navigation areas, status areas, and form/report areas are) as well as the color scheme. The interface design also contains basic actions (File, Edit, and View). In the end the template aspect brings together the metaphors, objects, actions, and icons used.

  9. The interface metahpors, objects, actions, icons and templates make up what is known as Interface Standards Design. These are all of the basic design elements that are common throughout an entire system, and these standards must be set in order to ensure consistency throughout the system.

An Interface Metaphore explains exactly how the system will work once it is created, and provides the user with the ability to predict how the system will work before they even see it. For example, an accounting system may have a balance sheet, journal or checkbook appear as on the screen in which the user can input information. Its better not to force a strange metaphore onto a system because all that will do is lead to confusion for the user.

Interface Template define the general appearance of all screens in the information system, the paper-based forms and all of the reports included. This template draws together all of the other standards of design to be discussed further.

Interface Objects are the fundamental building blocks of the system such as the entities and data stores, whose names are specified in the template. For example "shopping cart" or "library", these interface objects are often very straight forward.

Also specified in the template are the, Interface Actions which include things like "buy" or "purchase" etc. These names for actions within the system are also straight forward and assist navigation through the system.

Lastly the Interface Icons are the pictures that will appear on command buttons as well as in reports and on paper documentation to highlight important information. Many icons such as the arrow for your mouse clicker, have become very well known and universally used.

  10. Interface metaphors- defines how the interface will work. A concept from the real world that is used as a model for the computer system.(Quicken uses a checkbook metaphor for its interface)

Interface objects- the fundamental building blocks of the system such as the entities or data stores. Should be easily understood by everyone

Interface actions- this specifies the navigation and command language style and grammar (using “buy” instead of “purchase”)

Interface icons- pictures that will appear on command buttons as well as in reports and forms to highlight important information. The best way is to use icons that were created by other and that people are familiar with. Can sometimes create more confusion than anything.

Interface templates- defines the general appearance of all the screens in the information system and the paper based forms and reports that are used. The template draws all the major interface design elements together.

  11. The purpose of an Interface Metaphor is that it defines how the interface will work. The contents that Interface Metaphor’s use to define how the interface will work is by using a concept from the “real world” that is then turned into a model for the computer system. An example of this is an accounting journal. The journals that you fill out by hand are very similar if not the same with many accounting systems.
