Chapter 9 - novice mistakes

What is one of the three common mistakes that novice analysts make in interface design?

  1. One of the three common mistakes is "Simplify Recovery from Mistakes" this simply means that the system should have an "Undo" button to help correct the users mistake.

  2. Another one of the most common mistakes is grammar order. It is important that the grammar order is consistent throughout the system. Some systems use the object-action order (user specifys an object and action is performed on that object) and other systems use action-object order (choose the action and then the object). Most users are familiar with the object-action order.

  4. The last of the three common mistakes that novice analysts make during interface design is displaying either to many commands or displaying a command that cannot be used.

  5. Another common mistake that novice analysts make in interface design is to do everything possible to prevent the uiser from making mistakes. Examples of this are; never display a command that cannot be used and confirm actions performed by the user to ensure this is what the user meant to do.

  6. One of the three common mistakes that a novice analyst makes in interface design is the "inconsistent use of grammar order". Commands in an interface require the user to specify an object and the action to be performed on that object. The interface can require the user to use either object-action order which is when the user chooses the object and then the action to be performed on that object or they can require the user to use the action-object order which is when the user chooses the action first and then the object that the action is to be performed on. The order should be consistent throughout the system at both the data element level and the overall menu level.

  7. One mistake that user analysis make in the user interface design phase is by having too many choices. By having too many choices you are more likely to confuse the user that to help them easily navigation the system. An example of this is WyoWeb, they offer a lot of different choices, and a few of their choices are similar enough that they could combine them.

  8. If you go surf the net, or visit our our Wyoweb, you quickly notice a number of interface design issues out there and they could have all been simply rectified had the design phase been properly planned and implemented. I've had the opportunity to help develop a number of interfaces and one thing that I've learned, is to develop an intial design, lay it out, test it, go back and remove anything that's not necessary, simplify the design, test, and go back and simplify yet again.
