  1. One of the typical syntax errors commonly found in process diagrams would be a "black hole error" which is the action of drawing a process without an output. This would symbolize having a process occur, such as the accounts recievable clerk taking in a check but then not having an output in the diagram, such as recording the check in the accounts recievable account.

  2. Another type of syntax error would be the first law of conservation of data. This rule states that data at rest stays at rest until moved by a process. All this means is that data can't move from a data store unless it is pulled or pushed from a process. The second part of the law says processes can't consume or create data. The data only enters and leaves this system, nothing else is happening.

  3. Grammatical errors made by the analyst when they create the Data Flow Diagram are another common syntax error because syntax errors refer to the structure of the Data Flow Diagram and whether or not the DFD rules are followed. Essentially any typos are syntax errors.

  4. Syntax refers to the structure of the DFDs and whether the DFDs follow the rules of the DFD language. Syntax errors can be thought of as grammatical errors made by the analyst when he or she creates the DFD. An example of this is when you're missing quotations instead of "go" you input "go.

  5. In process diagrams its easy for a creator to have an action with inputs but forget and output, this would result in a black hole error. This black hole error is a very constant error performed which is considered to be a syntax error.

  6. When a black hole error occurs in a process diagram it simply means that information is going into a process but no information is coming out of that process. An example of this is when a bunch of transactions come into a business but no journal entries are being made to account for the transactions.
