What is meant by a semantic error? Provide an example.

  1. Semantic errors are were a process works but not the way the developer intends it to work. For example, say you develop a program to organize your files alphabetical but it instead organizes your files by category.

  2. Semantic errors refers to the meaning of the Data Flow Diagrams and whether the DFDs describe the business process accurately. Semantic errors are more misunderstandings by the analyst in collecting, analyzing, and reporting information about the system. An example of a semantic error is when you say something to somebody, and then they twist your words into what they got out of it, which isn't exactly what you wanted to get across.

  3. Semantics refers to the meaning of DFDs and whether they accurately describe the business process being modeled. Semantic errors can be thought of as misunderstandings by the analyst in collecting, analyzing, and reporting information about the system. An example of a systematic error is when you put an equation into the computer and you get an unexpected output or maybe a child says a sentence that has no semantic meaning: "colorless blue ideas wake up furiously."

  4. The word "semantics" refers to the meaning of the Data Flow Diagrams and whether or not they acutally describe the business brocess being modeled realistically or not. Thus, semantic errors are any misunderstandings of the analysts when gathering or inputing information, any misrepresentation thus is a semantic error. This is saying that there is somthing fundamentally wrong with the data because of a misinterpretation of it before it was put into the system or as it came out.

  5. Semantic errors are pretty hard to find and fix. These have to do not with how the statements are constructed but with what they mean. Such things as incorrect variable types or sizes, nonexistent variables or subscripts out of range. Things come out differently than what was intenteded.

  6. Semantic errors can be considered to be a misunderstanding of information about the system. These errors usually included inputs and outputs. Like if an action forms an output but doesn't include the appropriate inputs to form the output. These are hard to find because people should know the system and understand what is going on.
